Flight Competition

"Flights" are used for all individual stroke play competition. Flights provide equitable competition between players with comparable handicaps. All players are flighted using their Stroke Index for that course, from the lowest stroke index to the highest. The total number of players in the tournament determines the number of flights. To help maintain equitable competition, flights may vary in size by 2 or 3 players in some tournaments.

Team Competition

Because Teams consist of player with differing handicap indexes, all Teams will compete in a single Flight. You can form your own 2 Player or 4 Player teams or sign up as individuals and will be randomly drawn and placed on a team with other individuals by the Tournament Director.

Medal Play (Individual Stroke Play)

Players compete against all other players within their flight, using full handicaps. The player with the lowest net score round within each flight wins that flight. Second lowest net score wins 2nd place, third lowest net score wins 3rd place, etc.

Modified Stableford (Individual Stroke Play)

A variation of Medal Play, with flights, but hole-by-hole scoring is on a point system. Net Double Eagle = 8 points, Net Eagle = 5 points, Net Birdie = 2 points, Net Par = 0 points, Net Bogie = minus 1 point, Net Bogie or more = minus 3 points. The player with the highest point total within each flight wins that flight. Second highest point total wins 2nd place, etc.

2-Player Select Drive

Each team member hits his/her Tee Shot on all holes. The team selects the better of the two shots and both play their 2nd shots from that spot and continue to play their own ball until it is holed out. The One Low Net Score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score.
Note: Each player's Tee Shot must be used on at least two par-4 holes and one par-3 or par-5 hole on each nine.

The team with the lowest net score for the 18 holes wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

For the second nine holes, both team member's net score for each hole will be used for the team score. The team with the lowest net score for the 18 holes wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

2-Player Team Total

Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The net scores of both team members are used for the team score on each hole. The team with the lowest net score for the 18 holes wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

2-Player "Green Ball"

Each team is given one (1) "special" ball designated as the "Green Ball". A major objective of this competition is to finish the 18 holes without losing the green ball. The Team designates Player #1 and Player #2. Team player #1 must play the green ball on all odd-number holes, beginning with hole #1, and plays his/her own ball on all even-numbered holes. Team player #2 must play the green ball on all even-number holes, beginning with hole #2, and his/her own ball on all odd-numbered holes. Both the green ball and the regular ball are played until holed out.

The low net score of the team for each hole, be it the green ball or the regular ball, will be used for the team score. The team that posts the lowest net score without losing the green ball wins. The team with the second lowest net team score without losing the green ball is 2nd, etc. If all green balls are lost prior to completion of 18 holes, the team who completes the most holes prior to losing their green ball wins.

This is one of MGA's most popular formats every year.

4-Player 2-Best Ball

For holes 7 through 12, the three lowest net scores of the team will be used for the team score. For holes 13 through 18, the low net scores of all 4 team members will be used for the team score. The team with the lowest team net score wins. The team with the second lowest team net score is 2nd, etc.

4-Player Baseball (Designated Hitter)

This fun and popular format gets all 4 team members involved in the scoring. Each team designates its members as players A, B, C and D. Player A is designated hitter (DH) on holes #1, 5, 10, and 14. Player B is DH on holes #2, 6, 11, and 15; player C on #3, 7, 12, and 16; and player D on #4, 8, 13, and 17. Each team members plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. The net score of the DH and the lowest net score of the other 3 players will be used for the team score on each hole. With no designated hitter on holes #9 and #18, the 2 lowest net scores of the team are used for the team score. The team with the lowest team net score wins. The second lowest team net score is 2nd, etc.

4-Player 3 Best Ball and Bonus (3-4)

Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. Net Score Points are used to determine Team Score on each hole.

Scoring (All Net): Par = 0 points, Birdie = 1 point, Eagle = 2, Bogie = -1, Double Bogie = -2, etc.
A bonus point is awarded if all 4 players (net scores) par the hole.

Example: 3 pars and 1 bogie = 0 points (since the 3 pars = Quota); 4 pars = +1 point (the 4th par is the bonus point; 3 pars and 1 birdie = +2 points (bonus point for the 4th score better than bogie + 1 point for the birdie; 2 pars and 2 bogies = -1 point; 1 birdie, 1 par, 2 bogies = 0 points; 1 birdie and 3 bogies = -1 point; etc.

The team with the lowest net score wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

4-Player ABCD Scramble

Team handicap will be a percentage of the cumulative individual handicaps of the 4 Team players. After all team members hit their Tee shots, the team will select the best tee shot and all players hit from that spot. The best 2nd shot will be determined and all players hit from that spot, etc., until the ball is holed out. The total number of strokes for each hole will be used for the team score. Unlike all other formats above where individual or team net scores determine winners, the adjusted Team handicap will be used to determine team scores. The team with the lowest net team score wins. The team with the second lowest net team score is 2nd, etc.

Close-to-Pin Competition

All events will include a Close-To-Pin (CTP) competition with no additional fee required. All players are separated into 2 "CTP Flights" using their tournament handicap, from the lowest handicap to the highest. Each Flight will compete on two designated Par 3 holes. Winner of a CTP hole will be the player whose ball, on the green, is measured closest to the hole.
Note: CTP applies only to the first shot attempt from the teeing area and the ball must come to rest on the green.

And the Winner Is…

In all Individual and Team tournaments, if multiple players within each flight or teams post identical low net scores, the 1st place winner is determined by a scorecard playoff beginning with the #1 handicap hole and continuing to #2 handicap hole, etc., until the tie is broken. Ties for 2nd, 3rd, etc., places will share prizes.

Exception: At the Deer Park Golf Course Classic, which is a Medal Play tournament, if multiple players post identical low net scores within flights, 1st place winner within that flight will be determined by a Sudden Death Playoff if the course will allow us to do so and time permits. Ties for 2nd, 3rd, etc., will share prizes.

Optional Competitions

Skins Competition

As an "optional" side game, players may enter our Skins competition, which will be included at all tournaments. Cost to enter Skins is $5.00. Skin players are separated into 2 "Skin Flights" using their tournament handicap, from the lowest handicap to the highest. Gross scores will be used to determine Skin winners for each hole. A skin is won if only one player has the lowest gross score recorded for that hole. If more than one score is low, that hole is halved and yields no winner. The Skins pot is determined by the number of Skins players within each Skins flight and will be shared by the number of skins won within that Skins flight.

Classic Team Competition

An "optional" Team competition, players may enter this event with one or two different partners. Cost to enter each team is $10.00. Each team member plays his/her own ball until it is holed out. For the first round (Saturday), the one low net score of the team for each hole will be used for the team score. For the second round (Sunday), both team member's net score for each hole will be used for the team score. The team with the lowest net score for the 36 holes wins. The team with the second lowest net score is 2nd, etc.

Match Play

Entry fee for Match Play is $25.00. Members who sign up to compete in Match Play will be drawn into a tournament bracket and play 1-on-1 with other members within that bracket in a single elimination competition. Players continue to compete as long as they continue to win their matches. Loser of a match is eliminated from Match Play competition. The total number of players entered will determine the number of Match Play rounds within each bracket and the winner of each bracket will play for the Match Play Championship.

Start of Match Play competition will be announced by the Tournament Director before April 1st. In the first two rounds of Match Play, members will compete in Match Play competition only, and not in the regular format tournament. After the 2nd round of Match Play, in addition to the Match Play round, a player can opt to compete in the regular format tournament as well.

All Match Play is "Hole-By-Hole" competition with the winner of the hole determined by Low Net Score for each of the 18 holes. Holes with tie net scores are considered halved. The winner of the match is the player with the most holes won.

Match Play handicaps for each match will be provided based on the most current handicap in our MGA Handicap Manger Database.

Since Match Play is based on Net Score on each hole, the player with the lower handicap will play to a Zero (0) handicap and the player with the higher handicap will be given the stroke difference between the two competitors handicaps as determined by that course scorecard.

Example #1: Player A has a 10 handicap and Player B has a 20 handicap. Player A plays to a "0" handicap and must give Player B 10 strokes (one stroke each on the 10 most difficult handicap holes as determined by that course scorecard.

Example #2: Player A has a 10 handicap and Player B an 11 handicap. Player A gets no strokes and Player B gets one (1) stroke on the #1 handicap hole as determined by that course scorecard.

Note: New members must have a minimum of 5 rounds played prior to the start of Match Play to be eligible to compete in Match Play Competition.
